Eriko Hirano (平野 依里子 Hirano Eriko), nicknamed Ekko, is a character in the series Kimi ni Todoke. She is a classmate of Sawako Kuronuma alongside Tomomi Endou where they are members of her study group.

Background[]

Eriko is often seen alongside her closest friend Tomomi Endou where they both have been Sawako Kuronuma's classmates throughout high school.

Plot[]

In the first seating arrangement of her first year, Eriko's desk is in front of Tomomi Endou's. After the seating arrangements change, Eriko sits to the right of Tomomi, on the same row as Sawako Kuronuma and Shouta Kazehaya. In Episode 3/Chapter 3, after Pin assigns Sawako with the attendance log after school, Shouta encourages Eriko and Tomomi to approach Sawako and help her out. On another day after school, Eriko and Tomomi approach Sawako for help on their homework.

In Episode 4/Chapter 5, Eriko and Tomomi approach Ayane Yano and Chizuru Yoshida over the rumors the former two had been hearing about the latter two. In Episode 6/Chapter 7, Eriko and Tomomi witness Sawako being pushed to the floor of the female WC while trying to defend herself from the rumor-spreaders.

In Episode 8/Chapter 9, Sawako is informed that she's been talking Eriko and Tomomi as if they were friends too. As a result, Sawako is challenged to address her friends by their first names. She appears to have less difficulty calling Eriko and Tomomi by their nicknames "Ekko" and "Tomo". During the sports festival, Eriko joins Chizuru and Ayane in the women's volleyball team of their class, though is not seen in sporting action.

In Episode 13/Chapter 15, Eriko and Tomomi admit that they heard the rumors about Sawako from Kurumi. This allows Ayane and Chizuru to confront Kurumi. After the sports festival, Eriko and Tomomi join the rest of the named cast at an afterparty at the karaoke bar.

Eriko and Tomomi remain in Sawako's class for the second year, and sit apart during the first seating arrangement of the year. They no longer play a role in the plot, appearing only at the second-year Christmas party and the third-year New Year's shrine visit outside of school.

Etymology[]

  • The name Eriko means "rely on" (依) (e), "village" (里) (ri) and "child" (子) (ko).
  • Eriko's surname Hirano means "flat, broad, level, even, peaceful" (平) (hira) and "field, wilderness" (野) (no).
